Overview
Digit focuses on your manufacturing and inventory workflows. Because tax regulations vary by region and business type, Digit does not currently set the "Taxable" flag in QuickBooks.
By default, QuickBooks Online (QBO) often marks new items as "Non-Taxable." If you have a large product list, the fastest way to update this is via a Lean CSV Import rather than QBO’s "Spreadsheet Sync" tool (which often crashes with large datasets).
The Solution: The "Lean" Batch Update
Instead of a full data sync, we recommend a "Lean" update. This tells QuickBooks to only change the tax status while leaving your names, descriptions, and prices untouched.
Step 1: Export your list from QuickBooks
In QBO, go to Sales > Products and Services.
Click the Export icon (next to the print icon) to download your current list as an Excel or CSV file.
Step 2: Clean your file (The "Lean" Method)
To prevent errors and speed up the process, delete all columns except for two:
Product/Service Name (QuickBooks uses this to "match" the record).
Taxable (Change these values to Yes).
🧠 Why delete other columns? It reduces the risk of accidentally overwriting your prices or descriptions with old data.
Step 3: Batching for Success
QuickBooks Online often struggles with imports larger than 1,000 rows.
If you have more than 1,000 products, split your list into multiple CSV files (e.g.,
Batch1.csv,Batch2.csv).
Step 4: Import back to QuickBooks
In QBO, go to Sales > Products and Services.
Click the arrow next to "New" and select Import.
Upload your "Lean" CSV.
On the Map Data screen, ensure "Product/Service Name" and "Taxable" are mapped correctly.
Click Import.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Digit overwrite this? No. Once you set a product to "Taxable" in QuickBooks, Digit’s sync will respect that setting.
Do I have to do this every day? No. This is typically a one-time "cleanup" for your existing catalog. For new items added via Digit, you can quickly toggle the taxable flag in QBO the first time you invoice them.
