Use the unit that makes sense to the operators who handle the item daily. If they think in terms of "50 pieces," make pieces your stock unit.
Purchase and sales units can be different. For example, you may buy by the case but stock by the piece.
Avoid complex decimals that confuse workers. The stock unit cannot be changed after item creation.
